Atletico Madrid are targeting Joao Gomes to strengthen their midfield after Conor Gallagher’s confirmed transfer to Tottenham Hotspur for €40 million, according to Marca. The club’s priority is to sign a central midfielder, and Gomes has emerged as a prime candidate.
The 24-year-old Brazilian international, capped 10 times, currently plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite being one of Wolves’ standout performers, the team is enduring a disastrous season, sitting last in the Premier League with only seven points from 21 matches. Gomes has started 18 of those games and played 24 in total this season, surpassing 100 appearances since moving to England.
Before arriving to the Premier League, Gomes rose to prominence at Flamengo, one of Brazil’s most prestigious clubs and a major exporter of talent. He moved to Europe in 2022 and is now in his fourth season abroad.
However, his time in England could end soon, as a winter transfer to Atletico appears to be a strong possibility.
