Another Checkers Sixty60 rider has died in a needless traffic accident, this time in Croydon near Macassar, Somerset West. This was confirmed by SAPS Captain Frederick van Wyk, reports NovaNews. The rider was a 23-year-old foreign national, who died at the scene due to his injuries.

A Toyota is understood to have collided with the Checkers Sixty60 rider near Kelderhof on the R102 on Tuesday morning. “Circumstances surrounding the accident are still being investigated. However, a charge of culpable homicide is being looked into by the Macassar police,” said Van Wyk.

ANOTHER CHECKERS SIXTY60 RIDER DIES

Unfortunately, this is not the first regrettable incident involving a Checkers Sixty60 rider in 2025. Back in June, a delivery rider was involved in a fatal head-on collision with a South African Police Service (SAPS) van on Voortrekker Road in Bellville. One month later another rider went viral for another reason entirely …

This was video footage of an active police chase and shootout in Muizenberg. And the brave rider – tasked with delivering his goods in less than 60 minutes – rode unfazed through a gunfight with an armed robbery suspect! Of course, SA’s social media users cracked jokes that the Sixty60 rider had ‘sixty lives.’

DANGEROUS RIDING

Sadly, the death of another Checkers Sixty60 rider is no laughing matter. In fact, it’s since been reported that delivery riders are involved in seven incidents daily nationwide. The need to deliver within 60 minutes creates a powerful incentive for riders to take risks and break traffic laws. Stopping this practice alone would put a worthwhile dent in SA’s poor road-accident statistics.

Likewise, the supermarket’s loose employment model clearly needs a rethink. Checkers Sixty60 riders operate as independent contractors. All they need is a valid motorcycle licence, permit (if foreign nationals) and access to a motorcycle. It’s understood there is minimal training and bike maintenance must be undertaken by the rider himself. Because the pay is low, so is the barrier for entry.

WHAT SHOULD CHECKERS SIXTY60 DO DIFFERENTLY?

The supermarket could ensure Sixty60 rider safety by setting more realistic delivery timeframes. It could offer more comprehensive rider training. And even active GPS/camera monitoring of rider behaviour, and adequate insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

But what do you think? Are Checkers Sixty60 riders getting out of hand? Have you experienced any close calls that nearly resulted in accidents? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below …
