After much public outcry following the re-appearance of potholes on roads within Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital with both commuters and residents expressing serious concerns, the failed sections are to be repaired, according Aniekan Umanah, commissioner for information.

Akwa Ibom is noted for a good network of roads across the state and Uyo, the state capital being one of the cleanest cities in the country, was fast losing the allure as potholes were taking over the roads within the city centre and the outskirts.

One notable spot is along Atiku Abubakar way at the foot of the flyover which has deteriorated to the extent that motorists get stuck in the area in addition to failed spots in many other areas including around Ibom plaza which is in the city centre.

At the Itam central park which is off Itam junction, two major craters have been formed on the major roads making it impossible for motorists to have a smooth ride.

It was gathered that the state government’s attention was attracted to the ugly situation following persistent media reports and most recently the pictures of the potholes shared online.

Reacting to the pictures, the state government in a statement signed by the commissioner for information, Aniekan Umanah said a detailed assessment of the potholes and failed portions of roads within the Uyo metropolis would be undertaken by the Ministry of Works for immediate intervention.

“The State Government is aware of the potholes that have appeared on some roads as a result of the heavy and prolonged rainfall in recent weeks,

“The government wishes to assure members of the public that as the rains subside, rehabilitation work will begin in earnest to ensure proper and durable reconstruction of the affected portions.

“Government hereby appeals to residents and motorists to exercise patience and understanding as arrangements are being finalized for the ministry of works to respond promptly and responsibly to infrastructure needs across the state,’’ the statement noted.
