First batch of Kenyan troops land in DR Congo’s war-torn east

Kenyan troopers landed within the metropolis of Goma in jap DRC, Saturday (Nov 12).

They had been greeted by native dignitaries and Congolese forces within the area.

Their arrival comes because the M23 insurgent group has surged throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu province, capturing swathes of territory and inflaming tensions within the Nice Lakes area.

The commander of the unit deployed in DRC, Lieutenant-colonel Obiero Denis, detailed the target of the troops. “Now we have a mandate to fulfil and it has 4 elements”, he advised reporters. 

“The primary is to work along with our colleagues within the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) to eradicate the unfavorable forces and the second is to work with the humanitarian group to help the internally displaced”, he concluded.

The UN’s humanitarian company estimates that latest combating in North Kivu has displaced over 180,000 folks.
