For an Unoriginal Horror, ‘Smile’ is Actually Scary

Minutes into Smile (2022), it was apparent that the trip could be a cliche-fuelled rollercoaster by all the psychological horror style’s best tropes. Dutch angles? Ooouh, so unusual, I’m all of the sudden feeling a way of dread and unease. Sickly inexperienced, blue, gray, color grading? One thing haunted should be afoot. Leap scares as a continuing? A sickening rating? Eye motifs? Themes of suicide, psychological sickness, a “smile” that masks one thing horrible? Aaaaah. It’s all so unique. 

However director Parker Finn’s feature-debut isn’t attempting to be unique. Or at the very least, I bloody hope it isn’t, as a result of all the pieces on this movie, from the promotional materials to the title all the way down to the very idea imparts a familiarity that edges on trite. In its fixed counting on well-worn tropes and structural inspiration (as famous by each different reviewer) in movies like The Ring and It Follows, Smile lets us know that we’re not going to see something new.

However all that shouldn’t take away from the truth that it’s terrifically properly finished. The movie is frightening. The leap scares are terrifying. The shock-horror scenes are each haunting and ugly, similar to these in Ari Aster’s blockbusters. However not like, say, that scene in Midsommar, the moments of visible gore in Smile appear to really propel the narrative, not simply completely disturb the viewer.

Heading into the cinema, I hadn’t seen the trailer (don’t), and I’d been given probably the most fundamental, single-sentence description of the plot: one thing possesses folks’s our bodies, and makes them smile a creepy smile.
