I Tried McDonald’s New Hot Honey Menu, and I Wish They’d Done This Sooner

The McDonald’s Hot Honey menu just dropped, and of course I had to try it.

Hot honey is the kind of food trend that arrives on the scene as a “Duh, yes, of course!” It’s a flavor offering that effortlessly balances spicy, sweet and tangy. It pairs well, in this reviewer’s mind, with just about anything from veggies like sweet potatoes to proteins like chicken tenders. But does it work on a fast-food menu?

The new McDonald’s Hot Honey Menu puts this question to the test. The fast-food chain recently announced the addition of four new menu items incorporating its new hot honey sauce as a limited-time offering for the Valentine’s Day season—and I immediately knew I had to try it for myself.

What is the McDonald’s Hot Honey Menu?

The McDonald’s Hot Honey Menu features four new limited-edition offerings that pair its hot honey sauce with the chain’s fan-favorite menu items. They include:

  • Hot Honey Sausage Egg Biscuit: This version of the chain’s classic pork sausage biscuit breakfast sandwich skips the slice of cheese and replaces it with a healthy drizzle of hot honey sauce.
  • Bacon Hot Honey McCrispy Sandwich: A McCrispy sandwich is topped with hot honey sauce, applewood-smoked bacon, crispy jalapenos, shredded lettuce and creamy mayo.
  • Hot Honey McCrispy Sandwich: This second take on the McCrispy sandwich features all the above toppings, minus the bacon.
  • Hot Honey Snack Wrap: This hot twist on the fan-favorite Snack Wrap nestles a McCrispy chicken strip, shredded cheese, shredded lettuce and hot honey sauce inside a flour tortilla.

What does the McDonald’s Hot Honey Menu taste like?

I started my taste test of the new McDonald’s menu with the Hot Honey Sausage Egg Biscuit, and I was immediately in love. The sausage biscuit is one of my go-to McDonald’s breakfast orders, so I feared that I would miss the cheese slice. Just one bite of this sandwich proved those fears misplaced.

The hot honey sauce added an exclamation point to the sausage biscuit, with an expertly balanced combination of lingering heat, a dash of mustard-y tang, and honey’s signature sticky-sweetness. While the Hot Honey Sausage Egg Biscuit was slightly messier to eat than its non-honey-topped cousin, it’s nothing that a quick dab of a napkin can’t fix. I will definitely be ordering this again.

Next, it was onto the menu offerings for later in the day. I started with the Hot Honey Snack Wrap as something of an appetizer. I was curious to see how the sauce paired with the shredded cheese, and I have to admit I think the hot honey overpowers a dish that typically excels thanks to its simplicity.

Then it was time for the Bacon Hot Honey McCrispy Sandwich, and I must admit that I am in love. The hot honey sauce meets its match with the crispy bacon and jalapeno slices; they all come together to make a harmonious, decadent chicken sandwich. While I’m not usually a fan of bacon on a chicken sando, it is absolutely the move here.

Finally, the Hot Honey McCrispy Sandwich without the bacon was also very tasty. This iteration is more hot honey sauce–forward than its bacon-topped counterpart, but it’s not overwhelmingly so. Still, to be honest, I was missing the bacon.

When is the Hot Honey Menu available?

McDonald’s Hot Honey Menu is available now in restaurants nationwide, but it’s said to be a limited-time offering, so it is not likely to stick around for too long. If you want to try it for yourself, consider this your sign to go ahead and make that happen.

Final Thoughts

McDonald’s hot honey experiment is certainly a success in my book. The sauce itself is similar to the chain’s iconic sweet-and-sour sauce, except it’s yassified, with its complex and layered flavor putting an exciting spin on some of the chain’s most beloved dishes. Now I just need to track down some more so I can dunk a Chicken McNugget—or 10—into it immediately.
