Police in Kroonstad, Free State, are investigating the theft of firearms, ammunition and bulletproof vests at the Moqhaka Parks Municipality building.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said the break-in likely happened at around 00:55 on Monday.

A municipal employee discovered the break-in when he arrived at work that morning. He reported that the burglars damaged the alarm control box and forced their way into the amnesty room.

Kareli said police suspect the burglars used a grinding tool to gain entry.

SAFES CUT OPEN

The employee also found that two steel safes inside the amnesty room had been cut open.

Kareli said preliminary investigations showed that the burglars stole “approximately 43 firearms in a form of 9mm’s, revolvers, pump guns, approximately 1105 rounds of ammunition and 6 bullet vests”.

He said police believe the burglars gained access by breaking through a wall next to a bathroom area.

“No arrests have been made at this stage. All relevant SAPS role players and forensic investigators attended the crime scene. A case of business burglary has been formally registered, and the intensive investigation is continuing,” Kareli said.

The SAPS is appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Kareli urged the public to contact Detective Colonel Ben Bolsiek of Provincial Organised Crime on 082 466 8530, call the Crime Line on 08600 10111, or submit an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS app.
