In the high-stakes 2026 SUV of the Year arena, the 2026 Kia Sportage’s low-key refresh wasn’t enough. Its subtle updates didn’t stand out next to newer, truly innovative vehicles. Others fared better against our six judging criteria, yet everyone agreed the updated Sportage remains a great compact SUV for the real world.

Against our advancement in design category, the restyling somewhat dilutes the unconventional look that helped the Sportage reach the finals during its 2023 SUV of the Year debut. In the cabin, a larger standard touchscreen runs a snappy new operating system, yet the dashboard around it also tones down visual interest compared to before. Unchanged is how high-quality and practical the cabin is. Senior editor Aaron Gold praised the “great center console storage with useful hideaway cup holders” and the “second grab handle located forward on the front door panels, so short people like me can easily close the door.”

Yet a critical annoyance survived the refresh: “I will complain about this dual-function climate and media control panel until Kia gets rid of it; it’s intensely stupid,” features editor Scott Evans grumbled, and he wasn’t the only one.

Efficiency is another criterion, and here the Sportage Hybrid AWD we evaluated posts good but not incredible fuel economy ratings. As we consider a vehicle’s entire lineup during our judging, we noted the available plug-in hybrid powertrain that offers all-electric driving range—and the thirsty base engine most Sportages are saddled with.

That relates to engineering excellence, too, as we know the base engine to be gutless. The hybrid is quicker, but its recent four-horsepower boost barely moves the needle. Regardless, the Sportage shows refinement unexpected for its class. “Kia’s chassis engineers are on a roll these days,” Evans said after a lap on the handling course. “A Sportage wouldn’t be expected to be enjoyable in a corner, yet it was actually pretty good.” Gold called the ride and handling “notably stable and predictable, right in line with what a vehicle like this should do.” To safety, the 2026 Sportage earns a five-star overall NHTSA score. Kia’s driver aids earned praise. “The features are easy to engage,” Detroit editor Alisa Priddle said, “and lane keep assist does an excellent job staying centered.”

The Sportage soared in terms of value. For the price, this loaded Hybrid model impressed with its high-quality feel and many amenities. “Everything you need,” editorial boss Ed Loh said.

The Nissan Leaf Is Greatly Improved With Some Big Caveats

Inside, the dash layout and the materials used are a massive step beyond the old model, but the touchscreen’s orientation away from the driver is a shared point of frustration among our judges. Meanwhile, second-row legroom and headroom are cramped enough to make you think twice about offering adults a ride. Another issue: The Leaf’s
