Felix Agu suffered an injury while in action for Werder Bremen last month…

Super Eagles defender Felix Agu willl return to action in 2026, following an ankle injury which he suffered in a Bundesliga game between Werder Bremen and St. Pauli last month, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old left-back just made his Super Eagles debut in June, during the Unity Cup in England.

He gave a very good account of himself in that competition, hence putting himself in Eric Chelle’s good books.

Last month, he was expected to play an important role for Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers games against Lesotho and Benin, but he suffered an injury at the start of the month, which ruled him out.

After diagnosis, it was confirmed that Agu had suffered a syndesmosis ligament injury, which meant that he had to undergo surgery.

Although Werder Bremen did not reveal the timeline for his recovery, Soccernet.ng reported that players who suffer Agu’s type of injury typically take 3-6 months before returning to action.

Now, according to a fresh report by Deich Stube, Werder Bremen’s doctor Peter Niemeyer has confirmed that Agu will not be able to play football until next year.

In fact, he is still using a special shoe and crutches. He will still use those for a while until his injury heals. Then he’ll he begins his rehabilitation.

Why Felix Agu’s Injury Is A Big Blow For The Super Eagles

Felix Agu’s injury is a big blow for Nigeria, as this was supposed to be the year that he establishes himself as a national team regular.

He has experience playing at a higher level than Bruno Onyemaechi, who hasn’t exactly distinguished himself at the left-back role for Nigeria.

Agu is very quick, an adept dribbler, and offers a significant presence in the final third. His qualities would have been a great addition to the Super Eagles.

Moreover, this period is a critical one for Nigeria, as the World Cup playoffs are set to go down, while the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is less than six weeks away.

Agu will like return to action in February or March. He will be hoping to return to his best as soon as possible so he can earn a Super Eagles spot quickly.
