Luka Modric, widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, has shared his list of the five greatest footballers of all time, surprisingly omitting Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The 40-year-old Croatian, whose career began at Dinamo Zagreb and included a stint at Tottenham Hotspur before spending over a decade at Real Madrid, is now in the twilight of his career with AC Milan. Despite his age, Modric continues to perform at a high level and has never shied away from expressing admiration for football legends who inspired him growing up.

Topping his list is Diego Maradona, the Argentine icon who mesmerized fans in Naples and around the world with his dribbling, vision, and creativity. Modric recalls meeting Maradona several times and described him as one of the greatest players in football history, whose performances in Italy between 1984 and 1992 left a lasting impression.

Modric also highlighted Francesco Totti, the AS Roma legend who spent his entire career with one club. Known for his technical brilliance and goal-scoring ability, Totti’s loyalty and unique style earned him a special place in Modric’s admiration. “Playing against him was impressive, and swapping shirts with him was something unique,” Modric remarked.

Ronaldo Nazario, the Brazilian striker renowned for his speed, power, and goal-scoring prowess despite career-threatening injuries, is another of Modric’s selections. He describes R9 as his favorite growing up, noting that even Cristiano Ronaldo could not match the affection he holds for the Brazilian’s artistry on the field.

Modric also paid tribute to his fellow Croatian, Zvonimir Boban, a four-time Serie A winner with AC Milan and a key figure in Croatia’s third-place finish at the 1998 World Cup. Boban’s intelligence and skill in midfield left a lasting impression on Modric during his formative years.

Finally, Zinedine Zidane made the cut, recognized for his combination of technical mastery and physical presence in midfield. Modric credits Zidane as a significant influence during his early career at Real Madrid, praising the Frenchman’s guidance and exceptional talent.

Through his selections, Modric celebrates players who not only excelled individually but also inspired a generation, illustrating that greatness in football extends beyond statistics and trophies.
