Studying from home has become a real possibility for many Nigerians and now, the Federal Government has made it even more official. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released a list of seven federal universities approved to run accredited distance learning programmes.

This means students can now earn degrees from the comfort of their homes without having to attend regular on-campus classes.

The move is part of a larger plan to make higher education more accessible to Nigerians, especially those who face challenges such as distance, work schedules, or financial limitations.

With flexible study options and online learning platforms, students can now balance school with other responsibilities while still earning recognised degrees.

University of Ibadan (UI)

The University of Ibadan’s Distance Learning Centre is one of the oldest and most respected in Nigeria. It has built a strong reputation for offering flexible undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Through this centre, students can study at their own pace while enjoying the same academic quality that UI is known for.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

Located in Ile-Ife, the Obafemi Awolowo University Centre for Distance Learning has opened doors for students who cannot attend physical lectures. The university combines digital tools and online classrooms to ensure learning remains interactive and efficient. OAU’s system allows learners to access study materials anytime, anywhere.

University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos, through its Distance Learning Institute, continues to lead in remote education. Based in Akoka, Lagos, the institute caters to working professionals and students who prefer flexible schedules. It has built a strong digital system that allows learners across Nigeria to access lectures, submit assignments, and even take exams online.

University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID)

The University of Maiduguri has shown great commitment to education despite regional difficulties. Its Centre for Distance Learning provides opportunities for students who might otherwise be unable to attend university. UNIMAID’s online programmes are designed to give learners in the North-East region and beyond the chance to pursue quality education from home.

Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), Yola

Known for its focus on science and technology, MAUTECH Yola offers remote degree options through its Centre for Distance Learning. The university integrates digital technology into its teaching process, helping students acquire both academic and practical skills relevant to modern industries.

University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)

The University of Abuja’s Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education is another government-approved institution. It provides flexible learning opportunities for students of different backgrounds from full-time workers to stay-at-home parents making education more inclusive and accessible.

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria

Ahmadu Bello University’s Distance Learning Centre in Zaria has expanded its reach nationwide. It offers programmes that fit into busy lifestyles while maintaining high academic standards. ABU’s centre has become a top choice for those looking to combine convenience with quality education.

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

While not part of the seven listed distance-learning centres, NOUN deserves a special mention. Established in 1983, it remains Nigeria’s leading open university and does not require students to write the UTME before admission. NOUN is designed for people who want to study at their own pace, from anywhere in the country.
