Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, is reportedly planning an all-out attacking approach as Nigeria face Lesotho in a crucial World Cup qualifier today, October 10, in Polokwane, South Africa.
According to multiple reports, Chelle could line up four forwards as he looks to revive Nigeria’s chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The game, scheduled for 5 p.m. Nigerian time, is a must-win for the three-time African champions, who currently have a slim chance of progressing.
Is this a possible shift in formation
Chelle, who usually favours a diamond formation, may switch to a more direct 4-4-2 setup. The possible attacking quartet includes Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray), Tolu Arokodare (Wolves), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta), and Moses Simon (FC Paris).
If confirmed, it would be the first time under Chelle that the Super Eagles would field four natural forwards from the start, a move that clearly shows his intent to go for goals rather than just control possession.
Super Eagles is a must-win situation
Nigeria’s qualification hopes hang in the balance after inconsistent results in previous matches. The Super Eagles will not only need a win but also depend on favourable outcomes from other fixtures involving South Africa and Benin Republic.
A convincing victory against Lesotho could prove vital, especially if goal difference or head-to-head records become decisive in the playoff race.
Another big positive for Nigeria is the return of Victor Osimhen, who was sidelined in September after sustaining an injury against Rwanda.
The Napoli forward is expected to lead the line with his trademark intensity and finishing power, offering a major lift to the team’s attack.
How Chelle and the Super Eagles has been struggling to find oals
Since taking over as coach, Chelle’s Nigeria have not scored more than two goals in a competitive match. His record includes a 2–0 win over Rwanda, a 1–1 draw with Zimbabwe, a 1–0 victory against Rwanda in Uyo, and a 1–1 draw with South Africa.
Fans have been calling for a more adventurous approach, and this rumored four-forward line-up could be Chelle’s response to growing pressure from supporters and critics alike.
While the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports of Chelle facing dismissal, the manager knows the next two games could define his future with the team.
