The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Marine Bridge in Ijora, Apapa, for essential maintenance. The closure, which will last for 15 days, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the bridge remains safe and in good condition for daily commuters.
According to a statement shared by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on his official X account, the closure will allow the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out critical maintenance on the bridge’s underlying bearings.
The ministry is working in coordination with the Lagos State Government to complete the project efficiently.
“The Marine Bridge in Ijora, Apapa Local Government Area, will be closed for 15 days to allow for essential maintenance works,” the statement said. “Motorists are advised to be patient, as the closure is part of the traffic management plan for the ongoing repair of the bridge.”
Two Phases of Maintenance and Traffic Diversions
The project will be executed in two phases to reduce congestion and make room for smoother traffic management.
Phase I will run from Saturday, 11th October to Saturday, 18th October 2025, covering the section from the foot of Marine Bridge along Lawani Oguntayo Road near UBA, heading toward Apapa and Costain.
During this period, motorists traveling from Ijora Olopa to Apapa will be diverted through the Ijora Causeway Access Ramp near Omni Retail Company, then to Ijora 7up, before turning left onto the Lilypond Access Ramp to continue their journeys.
Phase II will begin Sunday, 19th October and end on Saturday, 25th October 2025, focusing on the stretch between Ijora Badia and the Lilypond Access Ramp toward Apapa.
In this phase, vehicles moving from Ijora Olopa to Apapa and Costain will be diverted about 50 meters before the work zone into a contraflow with Costain-bound traffic, rejoining the main road after about 500 meters.
Motorists heading from Apapa to Costain, Lagos Island, or Ijora Olopa will also move through a contraflow around the work zone before resuming normal traffic.
What motorists should know
The Lagos State Government has urged all road users to plan their journeys early and remain patient throughout the repair period. With several maintenance projects happening at the same time, traffic in some areas may be slower than usual.
Aside from the Marine Bridge repairs, the Adeniji Adele Interchange, CMS corridor will also undergo a six-week repair starting Sunday, 12th October 2025. This project, handled by the Federal Ministry of Works, will run daily from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
To ease congestion, only one lane will be closed at a time while others remain open for traffic. The repair work is expected to conclude by Sunday, 23rd November 2025.
The government has assured residents that these repairs are necessary to improve road safety and traffic flow across the city, especially in high-traffic zones like Apapa and Lagos Island.
Motorists are advised to follow the diversion signs, cooperate with traffic officials, and stay informed about updates as Lagos continues efforts to maintain safer and better roads for all.
