Chelsea Football Club has paid a glowing tribute to former Nigerian international, Celestine Babayaro, as the ex-defender celebrated his 47th birthday on Friday, August 29.

Babayaro, who joined the London club in 1997 from Anderlecht, was one of the most exciting African players of his era. At the time, his £2.25 million transfer fee made history as Chelsea’s record signing for a teenager, a bold move that showed the Blues’ faith in his talent.

During his eight years at Stamford Bridge, the left-back carved his name into the club’s history. 

He played 197 matches across all competitions, scoring nine goals and dazzling fans with his attacking runs down the flank. 

More importantly, Babayaro was part of a golden period for Chelsea, helping the club secure four major trophies: the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and the Community Shield.

Chelsea took to their official social media pages to honour the Nigerian star, sharing his photo alongside a heartfelt message to celebrate his birthday. 

It was a reminder of the lasting connection between the former Super Eagles defender and the club he once proudly represented.

Even long after his departure in 2005, Babayaro has continued to identify with Chelsea, maintaining strong ties with the club and its supporters. For many Nigerian football fans, his story remains a source of pride, proof of the impact African players have made in the Premier League.
