The Federal Government, through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and with support from the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), on Monday launched a new digital portal aimed at strengthening the country’s teaching workforce.
Speaking at the unveiling in Abuja, Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, highlighted that the portal is more than a technological upgrade,it marks a transformative step for teacher professionalism in Nigeria.
She said,
“Today, we are not merely unveiling a portal; we are opening a new chapter. A chapter where technology, innovation, and efficiency become the heartbeat of teacher professionalism in our country.
In a world that is increasingly digital, where knowledge travels at the speed of light and nations compete through ideas, skills, and creativity, Nigeria cannot afford to remain behind.
Through this portal, TRCN is not only digitising records but also creating a credible database of Nigerian teachers, ensuring seamless registration and licensing nationwide, providing real-time access to professional development opportunities, and strengthening accountability within the profession.”
Prof. Ahmad added that the portal would also help restore dignity to the teaching profession and provide a transparent overview of qualified professionals across the country.
Also speaking at the event, Ian Attfield, Senior Education Advisor at the British High Commission, emphasised the importance of adequately training and motivating teachers. He said the UK government, through the FCDO PLANE programme, has supported TRCN in developing the portal and will continue to back Nigeria’s education sector.
“Nigeria has a diverse teaching workforce, including community and faith-based school teachers, as well as educators in low-cost private schools. This diversity demands integrated, smart, and motivating systems,” Attfield explained.
The launch of the TRCN portal represents a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s education system, leveraging technology to enhance teacher efficiency, professional development, and accountability while fostering a more structured and effective teaching environment across the nation.
