Blunt attack, one costly error: 5 takeaways from Nigeria’s narrow defeat to Senegal

On a sweltering evening in Abidjan, Nigeria’s Super Eagles B were handed a tough lesson in tournament football as they fell 1-0 to a well-drilled Senegalese side in their opening Group D match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

While the scoreline suggests a tight affair, and indeed, for long periods it was, the key difference lay in the details: tactical structure, game management, and the ability to seize the moment.

With Sudan looming next and elimination now a real threat, here are five key takeaways from a performance that was as frustrating as it was revealing.

1. Chelle’s diamond gambit backfires

Coach Eric Chelle opted for a 4-4-2 diamond formation, a bold choice that ultimately proved limiting.

While the narrow midfield shape was designed to crowd out Senegal’s central operators, it left Nigeria dangerously exposed on the flanks. That allowed the Teranga Lions to find space wide, stretch the play, and gradually drag Nigeria’s defensive block out of shape.

But the bigger eyebrow-raiser was Chelle’s decision to leave his most dynamic players, Shola Adelani and Anas Yusuf, on the bench. The pair only appeared after Nigeria had already gone behind, tasked with rescuing a sinking ship in limited time.

For a coach who preaches a philosophy of control and cohesion, it was ironic that his most controlled lineup lacked the flair needed to turn the tide.

2. Super Eagles B showed grit

Let’s give credit where it’s due. Despite the result, Nigeria were never overrun.

For over an hour, they went toe to toe with Senegal, the reigning champions, a squad that has played together for years and one of the favourites for the title.

The defensive organisation was mostly sound, anchored by Junior Nduka and Leonard Ngenge, despite his late error. Even after conceding, the Super Eagles B didn’t collapse. They rallied. They pushed. They tried.

And that, in a high-pressure opener against Africa’s most cohesive CHAN outfit, is something worth applauding.

3. Blunt in the final third

That said, effort isn’t enough when you can’t score. Nigeria’s attack was disjointed, with little synergy between midfield runners and the frontmen. Sikiru Alimi’s industrious performance was undermined by a lack of service and sharpness in the final action.

There were moments of promise, half-chances, over-hit crosses, teasing through balls, but Nigeria rarely looked like scoring. For all their tidy play in the middle third, the final ball often lacked conviction. With CHAN games typically tight, seizing even a half-chance is crucial. Nigeria didn’t.

4. One mistake, one punishment

Football at this level punishes indecision. In the 75th minute, a miscommunication between Leonard and goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal proved costly. Senegal pounced with precision, and Christian Gomis had the simplest of tap-ins.

It was a harsh reminder that margins matter. A moment of slackness in an otherwise disciplined display was all it took to decide the game. Chelle’s men will need to tighten up, especially in crunch situations, if they are to survive what’s now a do-or-die clash against Sudan.

5. All eyes on Sudan clash

The CHAN format is unforgiving. One defeat puts you on the brink, two sends you home. Nigeria now have no margin for error.

Next up? Sudan, a side that held Congo 1-1 and will be smelling blood.

Chelle must reassess his approach. The diamond midfield must go or be adapted. The bench must be better utilised. And, perhaps most importantly, the players must show urgency and bravery in the attacking third.

Only a win will do now, and Nigeria must find a way, quickly, to unlock their attacking potential and avoid an early exit.
