Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have cemented their legacy as the queens of African basketball by winning an unprecedented fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship, becoming the first team on the continent to achieve such a remarkable milestone.

The reigning champions defeated Mali 78–64 in a fiercely contested final, held on the last day of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket. The win extended D’Tigress’ astonishing 29-game unbeaten run in the competition, a streak that dates back to 2015.

Unlike their earlier dominant displays, D’Tigress were pushed to their limits by a determined Malian side. Nigeria started slowly once again and struggled to find rhythm in the opening quarter. Mali matched them blow-for-blow, forcing a 41–41 tie at halftime.

But coach Rena Wakama’s team responded with characteristic composure and grit. Anchored by their depth, defensive intensity, and big-game experience, Nigeria pulled away in the second half to secure yet another title and extend their reign over African women’s basketball.

D’Tigress have now won five straight AfroBasket titles (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025) and remain undefeated in the competition since a third-place finish in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 2015.

Their 29-0 record over the past decade underscores their unmatched dominance, consistency, and championship mentality.
