Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodo Mayana, passed away at 61, leaving behind a legacy that will forever echo in Nigerian football history. More than just a shot-stopper, Rufai was a national hero who rose to the occasion when Nigeria needed him the most.

Across a career that spanned two decades, his saves, presence, and even goals inspired a generation. Here are some unforgettable moments when Peter Rufai saved Nigeria, both literally and symbolically.

That Vital Penalty Save Against Ivory Coast – 1994 AFCON Semi-final

In the heated semi-final clash of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations against Ivory Coast, the match went into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout. With the pressure mounting, Rufai denied Armani Yao from the spot, a moment that changed the course of the game.

Rashidi Yekini would later convert the decisive penalty, sending Nigeria to the final. That single save turned the tide for the Super Eagles, and the nation celebrated.

Guarding Glory in the 1994 AFCON Final

Rufai’s composure and command of the box were key in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Zambia in the final of the 1994 AFCON tournament in Tunisia. As the last line of defence, he helped secure Nigeria’s second-ever continental title.

It wasn’t just about the saves, it was the confidence he gave his defenders and the calm he brought under pressure.

That tournament remains one of Nigeria’s proudest footballing moments, with Rufai at the heart of it.

Two World Cups, One Guardian – 1994 & 1998

Representing Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, Rufai stood tall on the biggest stage. He was the first-choice goalkeeper as the Super Eagles reached the Round of 16 both times, a massive achievement for a nation still relatively new to the global football elite.

Against the likes of Argentina and Spain, Rufai showed class, keeping Nigeria in tight matches and giving fans moments to cheer.

Peter scored a penalty vs Ethiopia

In a rare and bold moment, Rufai stepped up to take a penalty during a 1994 AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia and scored. That made him the first Nigerian goalkeeper to score a goal for the national team.

It wasn’t just a novelty, it was a statement of confidence and leadership. He didn’t just save goals — he scored one too.

Penalty Heroics in the 1988 AFCON Semi-final

Before his 1994 heroics, Rufai had already shown his worth in the 1988 AFCON semi-final. Facing Algeria, he saved a crucial penalty from the legendary Lakhder Belloumi.

That moment lifted Nigeria to the final, though they eventually fell short against Cameroon. Still, Rufai’s early impact had been cemented. Long before he became a household name, he had already earned his badge as a hero.
