Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate within the 2024 elections, has referred to as out the NDC and its supporters for what he describes as a wave of “lawlessness and thuggery” following the election outcomes. In a strongly-worded assertion on December 9, Dr. Bawumia urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to behave swiftly to revive peace and unity within the nation.
“I want to name on the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to exhibit statesmanship by reining in his supporters with a view to protect the peace and unity of the nation,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia accused some NDC supporters of storming collation facilities to power declarations in favor of their candidates, vandalizing state properties, and intimidating NPP members and sympathizers. He described these actions as a risk to Ghana’s democratic values and emphasised that the nationwide curiosity should come first.
“These wanton acts of lawlessness and brutality have been prolonged to state establishments and public workplaces, looting and stealing state properties within the course of,” he stated. He additional reminded President-elect Mahama, “You’ve got received an election; you haven’t staged a coup d’état.”
John Mahama addressed his supporters throughout his December 10 victory speech, urging them to desist from acts of vandalism. “I urge you to not vent your frustration in a legal enterprise,” he cautioned, calling for unity and deal with rebuilding the nation. “We should channel our anger and frustration into the optimistic enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our nation,” he added.
