2025 was a busy year in for Nigerian politicians. It was a year of surprise victories, renewed influence, and shifting alliances as the country moved closer to the 2027 general elections.

While the opposition made some progress, the ruling party still held a strong grip across the country. And in the middle of this changing landscape, some politicians stood out for the size of their wins and the level of attention they pulled. Here are the biggest political winners of 2025.

Soludo Sweeps Anambra With a Commanding Victory

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo had one of the most decisive wins of the year. The Anambra governorship election was not a close contest, Soludo dominated nearly every local government and most wards.

His final tally, over 422,000 votes, gave him about 71% of the total votes cast.

It was more than just a re-election; it was a public statement. Voters endorsed his leadership style, his policies, and his communication with the people.

After his victory, Soludo said he was ready to get back to work, describing governance as a “24/7 assignment.” For him, 2025 ended as a clear win.

Tinubu Consolidates Power as 2027 Approaches

While 2025 wasn’t an election year for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it was still a year that strengthened his political hold. By the end of the year, 26 out of 36 governors were aligned with the ruling APC, a major boost ahead of 2027.

Several powerful figures within the political, business, and administrative space continued to rally around the president, helping him tighten his influence across states. Even outside the APC, some governors and political heavyweights were seen shifting toward Tinubu’s camp or quietly aligning with his direction.

Analysts note that if Tinubu could win the 2023 election with far fewer governors behind him, he is even stronger heading into the next cycle. For these reasons, Tinubu counted 2025 as a big political win.

Emmanuel Nwachukwu Takes Over Anambra South Senate Seat

When Senator Ifeanyi Ubah passed away in 2024, a by-election was held for his Anambra South seat in 2025. APGA’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu emerged as the winner in August, taking over one of the state’s most influential political positions.

Nwachukwu’s victory was important not only because he replaced a key figure but also because it helped APGA retain its presence in a region that is often hotly contested. His win placed him among the notable political achievers of the year.

Folajimi Oyekunle Wins Ibadan North Bye-Election

In Oyo State, the PDP scored a needed victory when Folajimi Oyekunle won the bye-election for the Ibadan North federal constituency. He defeated APC’s Adewale Olatunji to secure a seat in the House of Representatives.

This win mattered for the PDP because it showed that the party could still compete effectively despite the APC’s dominance nationwide.

Oyekunle’s victory added balance to the political wins of the year and ensured that the opposition still had moments of success.
