Development of the island is intended to counter any military threat from China

Growth of the island is meant to counter any navy risk from China

The development work is predicted to take 4 years throughout which the ministry will construct runways and ammunition storage services and in addition pay compensation of round ¥2.2bn (£14m) to native fishermen who won’t be able to function throughout this era.

Growth of the 8km2 island will enable US carrier-borne fighters to relocate from their present training website on Iwoto Island within the Pacific, about 1,250 kilometers south of Tokyo.

In addition to two runways and ammunition bunkers, the event will embody development of a gas facility, plane hangars and a number of other wharves.

The placement of Mage Island is critical. Japan and the US need to strengthen defences on the so-called ‘first island chain’ within the East China Sea and Western Pacific near Taiwan amid rising safety issues over Chinese language expansionism.
